Disease Information: Malaria ended the lives of approximately 450,000 people in 2015, most of whom were children under the age of five. The disease causes symptoms such as accelerated heart rate, chills, fatigue, and fever which can be fatal to children. Majority of malaria cases come about through infection by Plasmodium falciparum, a protozoan parasite that is commonly transmitted through mosquitoes. Resistance to chloroquine, an anti-parasitic drug widely used to treat malaria, has caused a demand for the discovery and production of new drugs to combat the disease.
